Tesla has become one of the most valuable brands in the automotive industry in the last years. Tesla is growing quicker than most car companies might have expected. But what are the reasons behind this massive success?
Technology
Tesla has made incredible technological progress since it started. The brightest minds in the industry work at Tesla. And they are developing at such a fast rate that it makes us wonder what on earth has been going on at other automotive companies. It feels like Tesla has put the automotive industry in a rollercoaster that doesn’t look like it’s going to stop soon.
Other car manufacturers are keeping a close watch at what Tesla is doing. Some are even using technology from Tesla, so they don’t have to develop it themselves. We’re not even talking about small brands here: “Daimler uses Tesla’s battery packs; Mercedes-Benz uses a Tesla powertrain; Toyota uses a Tesla Motor. General Motors have even created a task force to track Tesla’s next moves.” says Peter Thiel, who has worked with Tesla CEO Elon Musk for several years.
Apart from the developments in the drivetrain and battery area, Tesla is also a step ahead of the competition when it comes to self-driving cars. Experts have said that the battle for autonomous vehicles will be won by the manufacturer who has the most data and knows how to handle it the best way. Tesla has collected loads of data over the last years because all of their cars have the sensors onboard that are needed for self-driving cars. Tesla is known for its excellent software, and their software engineers seem to have a significant advantage when it comes to self-driving cars.
Elon Musk
Elon Musk may be one of the most discussed CEO of recent years. He is truly one of a kind. Musk is a visionary, is hard-working, incredibly intelligent, and knows just how to get people behind his cause. He is controversial but gets things done.
Elon Musk has not founded Tesla as many people think. But he is the one that made Tesla what it is today. An unmovable force in the automotive industry. The main reason for this is not because he is a great manager, but he is a great leader. People believe in Musk and his vision for this world. They see how hard he works to achieve his goals, and that inspires the most excellent employees available to start working for Tesla.
Customers also believe in Musk. He often gets compared with Steve Jobs. When Apple introduced the iPhone, people were not only enthusiastic because of the technological breakthrough, but they were also inspired by Jobs. A lot of people buy a Tesla because they are inspired by Elon Musk, he wants to make this world a better place and Tesla’s are the means by which he wants to achieve this. People want to be a part of this vision and become true, loyal fans of Elon Musk and Tesla.
They’re cool
Admit it, Tesla’s have changed the way you think about electric cars. Elon Musk said the only way electric cars could really be successful is when they were actually cool. Unlike other electric cars that were on the market.
Tesla has proven that an electric car doesn’t have to be boring by creating incredibly quick models and by its great designs. Tesla’s are recognizable and look fantastic. Even the biggest petrolheads admit that Tesla’s are pretty cool.
This also has to do with the fact that Tesla started by building an electric sportscar. They rebuilt a Lotus Elise, which was already a popular sportscar and made an electric Tesla out of it. After this success, they launched the Model S, a high-end luxury car, which is pretty quick and really set the tone for Tesla. Tesla became a mainstream brand with the Model S, and with the launch of the Model X and the Model 3, they established a fleet of cars that suit the needs of a lot of people!
By the way, a cool little easter egg is hidden in the names of the cars. When Tesla has launched its newest model, the Y, they will have a pretty S.3.X.Y product portfolio 😉
