It is a wonderful time to be the new owner of a supercar. Supercars are more comfortable, more reliable, more efficient, and more service-friendly than ever before. As a result, more and richer car buyers no longer buy a Bentley or Mercedes-AMG but opt for an old Ferrari or Lamborghini. In the vibrant neighborhoods of Beverly Hills you see more and more old Lamborghini Diablos and Ferrari Testarossas. These car buyers soon discover that it is much more difficult financially and logistically to keep your supercar from 1980 or 1990 on the road than a modern Aston Martin DB11.
Looking for a dealer
With an old supercar, we are not talking about a ten-year-old Porsche 911 GT3 or a Ferrari F355. It is about real exotic cars, such as a Bugatti EB110 or a jaguar XJR-15. The maintenance of these cars is just as intensive as that of a Le Mans racing car. And who can do that? You don’t take an old supercar to the garage on the corner or to the official dealer. If they do not immediately send you away, you run the risk that they will send your car to one of their specialized branches abroad. With waiting times up to a year and huge costs.
Specialization of older engineers
Young mechanics from dealers of Ferrari or Porsche have never looked at such an old supercar under the hood. They cannot support them. Technicians who can do this are at least 50 years and older. One of the reasons is that there are little electronics in those old supercars. Everything is mechanical, and nothing is standardized. It is, therefore, important as a technician to specialize in the supercars of a certain brand. If you own such a car, you have to look for a passionate mechanic in the area who can and wants to maintain your car.
Custom parts
As already noted, almost everything is mechanical with an old supercar. Despite a lively exchange in parts, it is not easy to replace worn parts. The fitter must regularly make such a part himself. And once a supercar has been overhauled, it is often still quite a job to make it run well. The alignment, for example, cannot be done with the help of an alignment machine but must be based on feeling. So pay attention. Driving a supercar is wonderful, but has many hidden costs.
