The 90s was a great decade that many people failed to appreciate at the time. In the 90s most looked backed to the 60s,70s, and 80s and saw decades that had a collective feeling. The 60s were all about peace and love. The 70s were all about disco and technology. The 80s were known for big business suits, punk rock and heavy synth. Yet when we now look back on the 90s it is clear that it was an outstanding decade. It was the decade of pop, grunge, rock, pop punk, indie and more. It was the decade of economic growth and political upheaval. It was the end of a century and it lived up to it. It was also a time of incredible automobiles. There were cars in the 90s that most of us still fondly remember today. Let’s take a look at the fastest cars from the 90s.
In the 90s many celebrities and sportspeople wanted to be judged by the speed of their sports car. It was the era of the supercar and if a celebrity didn’t have a Ferrari F50 or a Dodge Viper in their garage, were they even that famous? It was a time when outlandish car models were not just accepted but expected and car manufacturers delivered. The fastest cars at the time were all able to do 0 to 60mph in just under 4 seconds. Yet some broke the 4-second mark and became household names as a result.
The 1998 Dodge Viper
At the close of the 90s Dodge released a new model of the famous two stripe Viper GTS. It could reach 60 in 3.9 seconds and had excellent handling. It was far more agile than the original Viper and was respected highly both on the track and on roads. To own a Viper meant owning a car that now only looked good but performed incredibly well too.
The 1997 Ferrari F50
The Ferrari F50 red bandit offered raw power to the user and a sleek design. What it lacked in comfort it more than made up for in its show-stopping ability. If you drove down the street in a Ferrari the world stopped to look. The F50 could hit 60 in 3.8 seconds with ease.
The 1995 Porsche Turbo 911
The Porsche 911 always surprises people with its speed. It is a supercar so we expect it to go fast but the fact that it goes faster than the Ferrari or the Dodge Viper will surprise many. The Turbo 911 could reach 60 in 3.7 seconds and it did so with incredible handling and a luxury feel. While the Ferrari reached almost the same speed it did it by cutting some corners on comfort. The 911 delivered on all fronts.
The Lotus Elite GT
The Lotus Elite was a car that was incredibly famous in the 90s that didn’t have the lasting name of Porsche or Ferrari. Yet it was fast. It could reach 60 in 3.5 seconds and offered an incredibly smooth drive. Once you hit 200mph in the Lotus you didn’t want to stop.
The McLaren F1
There is a massive step change when it comes to the McLaren F1. All the previous cars mentioned felt powerful but this car stood out at a different level. It could go from 0 to to 60 in a shocking 2.9 seconds and would leave any driver giddy with the rush it provides. McLarens never come cheap but this one was worth every penny.
The Dauer 962 Le Mans Porsche
The look alone of this vehicle screamed speed. It was a different animal to all the other cars. It chose to throw away the blueprint when it came to car design and as a result came up with many processes that are still copied today. The supercar looked incredibly cool but managed to deliver the speed to match reaching 0 to 60 in just 2.6 seconds.
