Should electric vehicles be forced to make noise?

There are a lot of benefits that come with driving an electric vehicle, but it is questionable whether or not they are fully safe on the road. One of the problems with electric vehicles is the fact that they make almost zero noise when they are moving, which can present some problems.

If a person is missing one of their senses, such as hearing or seeing, they might completely be unaware that a vehicle is approaching them. There have been quite a few cases where people have been hit by electric vehicles, based on the fact that they did not hear any cars nearby. Cases of injuries and death have been on the rise, which has raised a lot of concern over the lack of noise that electric automobiles make.

We use our ears more than we think, especially when it comes to awareness of an approaching vehicle. The lack of sound that electric vehicles emit actually poses a safety risk to the general public, which means something has to be done to rectify the issue.

There are many areas that are now requiring electric vehicle manufacturers to make their cars with added noise. This means the vehicles will have to emit noises that are reminiscent of a normal vehicle, which should take care of the problem. However, at the same time, it feels strange to force a vehicle to sound like an outdated piece of machinery.

One of the biggest reasons why some people buy electric vehicles in the first place is for a quieter and more comfortable driving experience. Forcing these electric vehicles to make typical driving noises sort of defeats the purpose.

Despite the fact that electric vehicles will now mimic the noises of average cars, you can still enjoy the vehicle and do some good for the environment. All the benefits that come along with driving an electric vehicle will be afforded to you, but your car will now sound like it is burning gasoline. One of the most bizarre things about the issue with silent vehicles is the fact that there is no real solution other than to add in sound.

One might think it would be better if all vehicles on the road were electric, but this would simply mean there would be more vehicles on the road that were making no noise. The only other solution would be to create roads that didn’t directly intersect with foot and bike traffic. However, this would mean implementing a completely new system of transportation, which would cost an unimaginable amount of money.

At the same time, there is little chance that enough of the population would be willing to part ways with their gasoline-powered cars. As it currently sits today, it makes sense to require that noise be added to these types of cars. It is generally considered dangerous to use headphones while walking near vehicles, which is a result of the same reasoning. If you can’t hear a vehicle coming, you are inherently in more danger of being hit.
