Owning a car can be expensive. From the monthly payment to insurance to fuel costs to maintenance, you put a lot into your vehicle. If you own a modern car, then there is a lot of advanced technology and components that can only be repaired by a professional. However, to save yourself money, there are some repairs that you can do on your own.

Oil Change

Changing your own oil can be a great way to save yourself some money and extend the life of your vehicle. Knowing how often this needs to be done will depend on how and where you drive your car and what the manufacturer recommends. Your owner’s manual will let you know how frequently your oil should be changed. When it’s time, take care of it on your own to help you save.

Replace Air Filters

If you’re looking for a way to improve your car’s performance and gas mileage, then replacing your air filter might help. This process can be done when you change your oil or sooner. If you notice your engine seems a bit sluggish or your fuel efficiency is suffering, you might need to replace this component in your car.

Switch Out Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are small, inexpensive items, but they can have a huge impact on how well your car drives. Changing these out is simple and easy, and putting new spark plugs in your car can increase fuel economy and make your ride smoother.

Add a New Battery

Putting a new battery in your car can help it run optimally. Switching this out is an easy task to undertake. The only thing you’ll need to be cautious of is acid from a leaking battery. However, putting on a pair of thick rubber gloves will protect your skin from the harmful material.

Fix a Burned-Out Headlight

Headlights can last for a long time, but at some point, they will burn out. To save yourself some money, change these out at home. You can find replacement bulbs at retail or auto stores or even online. Instructions on how to replace them can be found in your owner’s manual.

Put on New Windshield Wipers

If you’ve noticed that your windshield wipers aren’t working the way they used to, then it’s time to put on some new ones. This is usually a quick process, and it’s possible to find replacement wiper blades in a variety of stores and online.

Inflate the Tires

Keeping the right pressure in your tires will ensure that you drive smoothly and safely down the road. Many modern vehicles have sensors that let you know if your tire pressure is low, but you can also check it with a tire gauge. Adding or removing air as necessary will save you money and keep your tires in good shape. Maintaining and servicing your car is imperative if you want to keep it running for as long as possible. To save some money, consider doing some of these tasks on your own.
